A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
