Donald Trump's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Trump's intense appetite for revenge has rapidly transformed into a organized apparatus. Within the year since his election, the chief executive's rage and impulses have adopted the shape of administrative measures similar to analogous to historical authoritarian regimes. Government figures who resist his demands are promptly fired and replaced by supporters. Critical leaders who confront him face indictment, court proceedings and penalties. Opponents have been categorized under presidential orders as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with legal action as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Transformed

All situation involving legal action of critics and leniency for loyalists demonstrates its own particular features. Yet, regardless of their particular character, they exemplify examples of what has arisen as a deliberate approach. Those incidents are not random. Trump's removal of federal attorneys and law enforcement agents, coupled with his appointment of loyalists in high-level positions, began rapidly, soon assumed a consistency, and has now been formed into a regime. The justice department and the Federal Bureau have been transformed into partisan bodies under his direct direction to execute his wishes. Unfairness has been turned into standard. This is the system of punishment.

Management is focused with penalizing the leader's alleged adversaries than they are with defending our national security.

Within the System

The foundation of this mechanism has been exposed in the lawsuit of three ex- top Federal Bureau officials submitted in late summer in the judicial system in the capital against FBI director Kash Patel and top lawyer a key figure for illegal termination in “a campaign of retribution against them for what the accused deemed to be a refusal to demonstrate adequate devotion”. In the complaint that one official, the previous acting FBI director, recounts a discussion in which he “publicly confessed the illegality of his behavior”.

He had tried to protect agency personnel from being dismissed, the complaint states. He informed him that “White House figures” – understood by Driscoll to be the White House and federal prosecutors – had directed him to dismiss all those who they considered as having participated in a legal probe against him. The document adds: “The director explained that he had to terminate the personnel his leaders told him to dismiss, because his capacity to hold his own position was contingent on the dismissal of the personnel who were involved in investigations involving the leader. The director noted that there was nothing he or the official could do to prevent these or any other firings, because ‘the bureau attempted to place the leader in prison and he recalls it clearly.’” Once Driscoll advised the director he was breaking the bureau's own internal rules, Patel reportedly said “he knew that and he was aware the nature of the swift terminations were almost certainly unlawful”.

Extensive Consequences

Since the director's claimed acknowledgment to Driscoll, the justice department and the FBI have been dismantled and redirected for his revenge apparatus. Multiple of the FBI's top officials were terminated or pushed out in the early weeks of the presidency. Approximately 4,500 lawyers at DoJ have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. No fewer than multiple DoJ lawyers, among them those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in protest over what they viewed as partisan influence in dropping the corruption case against the local official, Eric Adams, in as a trade for his collaboration with the administration's ICE roundups of immigrants. The ethics division of the justice department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been reduced to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been severely reduced: 70% of its staff has left. A third of executives at the justice department have quit. The unit enforcing conservation statutes has lost a majority its leadership.

Incentives and Punishments

In the legal matter, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, she, stepped down in dissent against what she characterized as the “exchange”. The border official, Trump's “border czar,” was present as the enforcer with Adams on television to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in New York City.”. And, another figure, previously the acting deputy attorney general and a past legal representative, who brokered the deal, was granted an appellate federal judgeship, a possible stepping stone to the supreme court.

His immunity for wrongdoings carried out while in government, provided by the unprecedented ruling of the Republican majority on the supreme court, thus thwarting his legal action over the political violence and maintaining his political viability for the 2024 election, is the cornerstone on which he relies to shield his stalwarts. With such immunity, he has been liberated to permit misconduct. The consequence of the supreme court decision infuses his government and the political party thoroughly. The legal case has escalated. In the words of a past leader's administration lawyer the figure commented about the Watergate
