England and Wales Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales will face off in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a group together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
