An defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that safety is a issue in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This wider defence environment highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions habits.
