The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
