This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
